ASSESS DHT Final Conference

Digital health technologies have the potential to improve patient outcomes, reduce provider workload, and support more personalized care. Yet the pace of innovation has outstripped many existing approaches for evaluating these technologies so that they can be efficiently adopted by healthcare systems. Unlike pharmaceuticals or traditional medical devices, digital health technologies evolve rapidly, may incorporate artificial intelligence, and need to address topics such as cybersecurity, interoperability, and data privacy in ways that challenge conventional health technology assessment (HTA) frameworks.

The ASSESS-DHT project has been developing harmonized approaches to assessing digital health technologies in Europe. Its final consortium meeting will bring together policymakers, HTA experts, developers, healthcare providers, and researchers to discuss how Europe can scale adoption of these fit-for-purpose approaches to assessing digital health technologies. Attendees will explore how assessment frameworks can better balance digital innovation with robust evidence generation while supporting timely patient access.

The meeting will explain and debate the perspectives and evidence needs of key stakeholder groups, the unique characteristics of digital health technologies, and the implications of the evolving European regulatory landscape, including the MDR, AI Act, GDPR, and European Health Data Space. Participants will also examine how countries are currently assessing digital health technologies, highlight their emerging best practices relating to innovative digital health solutions, and identify opportunities for greater alignment across countries.

By bringing together diverse perspectives, this meeting aims to identify the key considerations that underpin future policy and assessment frameworks, ensuring that digital health technologies can be evaluated consistently, transparently, and in ways that maximize value for patients and health systems.
